VolkerWessels’ Construction and Real Estate Development division (BVGO) consists of various companies active in construction, renovation, real estate development, technical installations, and industrial production. The division asked Recognize to support them in a digitalization effort in the field of Risk Management. The goal: one comprehensive tool for all ongoing projects that is easy to manage. Recognize assisted in brainstorming, designing, and developing the digital solution: a project risk monitor. The ultimate tool to timely identify risks in a project.

PLAN
DESIGN PHASE.

How can we timely detect risks on a project and manage and communicate them faster? VolkerWessels Construction and Real Estate Development had been pondering this question for a while. The reason for this was the use of an Excel file to control the risks. This can and should be done more efficiently, so the division approached Recognize.

Recognize assembled a scrum team. The collaboration kicked off with a sprint 0. In this sprint, the entire process and the use of the Excel file were extensively discussed with the customer. The risk management process starts with acquisition, continues during the execution phase, and ends with delivery. The TIS procedure must also be taken into account.

Target groups were investigated in this phase. The tender managers, risk managers, and directors were involved in this business challenge. Additionally, the objectives were determined that will be central to the development of the digital solution. Firstly, the tool should contribute to insight into all ongoing projects, and secondly, user-friendliness plays a very important role in the design phase.

All findings were elaborated by Recognize in a storyboard with wireframes; a kind of blueprint of the solution. The wireframes were developed into a design. The idea? One environment in which the risks of all projects are listed, creating a uniform way of working and always providing up-to-date insight into the status of ongoing projects.

BUILD
DEVELOPMENT PHASE.

Time to start developing the digital portal. Every two weeks, the scrum team delivered a small part that included the configuration of the risk management. This was immediately tested by the client so they could experience the look and feel.

Afterward, new functionality was added and made available per sprint. The portal was fully customized and integrated with the TIS procedure. The portal supports the risk process and helps with:

• determining the risk profile of a project based on the quick scan;
• determining the impact and the necessary control measures;
• managing, discussing, and documenting the actions, action owner, and progress on the risks.

Therefore, the solution aligns perfectly with the set objectives and is a tool for timely identification, communication, and management of risks in a project. Additionally, the digital solution consists of one platform, creating a uniform way of working.

RUN
MANAGEMENT PHASE.

The collaboration has been experienced as very pleasant by both Recognize and VolkerWessels BVGO. We worked closely together and the communication was open and honest. At this moment, the solution is still being further and will be implemented in. This way, we have taken another step in digitizing the manual processes for our partners: digital transformation for more efficiency and productivity.
